Mallow St Patrick’s Day Parade will entertain you!

The hard work is done and all is in readiness for a spectacular and colourful St Patrick’s Day Parade in Mallow next Monday. Participants will assemble in the town park from 2pm, and the parade will set off at 2.30pm, led by Grand Marshall Michael J O’Neill with members of the Reserve Defence Forces and of course Thomas Davis Pipe Band. The theme of this year’s parade is ‘Let Us Entertain You’, and committee members are hoping for comedy, fun and entertainment to thrill the crowds gathered along the route. Taking part will be pre-schools, schools, community organisations, sports groups and businesses. The parade will go via West End and proceed down Main Street and past the reviewing platform outside the former Mallow Park Hotel. There will be special prizes for the best entries on the day.

This year’s Grand Mar-shal, 72 year-old Michael J O’Neill, is a native of Fair Street. Son of Emily and Patrick O’Neill, his mother was O’Sullivan from Spa Walk, and his father came from Chapel Lane. Michael was taught by the Patrician Brothers and was a member of their brass band and flageolet band, and took part in musical operettas and recited Irish poetry. He was also a member of Thomas Davis Pipe Band and the FCA. He has been married to Rose for 50 years and has three chil-dren, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, Jack.

Hopefully the good weather of this week will continue until next Monday at least, allowing participants and spectators to enjoy a great St Patrick’s Day 2014.
