Mallow to get new playground and Walled Gardens

Cork County Council has approved plans to build a new playground and public Walled Gardens park based on the grounds of Mallow Castle. Part VIII plans for the development, which will also comprise a car park, were approved by Councillors at their full Council meeting on Monday.
The playground is designed as an accessible and inclusive adventure play- ground which will have a natural aesthetic and is envisaged to fit in suitably with the setting of Mallow Castle. The old Walled Gardens of the Castle grounds are also to be restored to their former glory and opened to the public. In response to a question by Cllr. Gearóid Murphy, Fianna Fáil at the most recent Kanturk-Mallow Municipal District meeting, Council official Mary Hayes stated that she hoped that work would be under way by the summer of this year.
Welcoming the news, Cllr. Gearóid Murphy said that the new development would be a fantastic amenity for local people and visitors alike. “Since I became a councillor, I have received many representations from people looking for a new playground for Mallow, and I put down a motion on the subject in 2018,” he said. “Mallow is a growing town with many young families and this new playground will be extremely welcome. It is a really imaginative and adventurous playground, and I imagine it will not only be enjoyed by children locally, but will draw young families from far outside the town itself.
“The restoration of the old Walled Gardens of the Castle is also extremely welcome and will greatly enhance the tourism potential of the Castle. I am really looking forward to seeing this development completed and to seeing the restored Castle grounds. I would like to compliment the officials of the Kanturk-Mallow Municipal District for their ambition in bringing this project to this point.”
