Miriam wins national basketball title

Miriam Loughrey.

The Address UCC Glanmire have won their eighth InsureMyHouse.ie Paudie O’Connor Cup title, and first since 2018, after beating DCU Mercy 72-65 in a compelling contest at the National Basketball Arena last weekend. 10 points in the fourth quarter from Ireland international Claire Melia inspired a come-from-behind win, having trailed by 14 points to DCU Mercy at one stage in the final quarter. Melia was awarded the MVP, as she ended the game with 21 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, four steals and two turnovers. An important part of the team was Mallow’s Miriam Loughrey, who scored one basket in the game, and who learned her basketball with Mallow Basketball Club and has been an important part of the Mallow set-up for many years. Miriam is married to James Loughrey, who has had a wonderful sporting career with Mallow and Cork senior Gaelic football teams, and she is also a valued member of the teaching staff of Davis College. Well done. Miriam!
