A young West Limerick person has been honoured with a Special Achieve-ment accolade at the Garda National Youth Awards, held at the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise. Cormac Downey of Shanagolden was recognised for his involvement with Munster Hurling.
The Garda National Youth Awards recognise exceptional young people aged 13 to 21 who have positively contributed to their community. Cormac’s citation read: “Born with cerebral palsy, Cormac has confronted the challenges presented by this condition with remarkable resilience, courage and determination.
“From an early age, Cormac longed for independence and inclusion, and has grown into a confident, energetic, and driven teenager. He has embraced every opportunity, diving into sports and community activities with enthusiasm.
“Cormac has been playing wheelchair hurling since he was ten years old and has raised vital funds and awareness for Munster Wheelchair Hurling by completing the Great Limerick Run – an extraordinary feat that highlights both his endurance and generosity. As captain, Cormac led the junior players to victory in the wheelchair hurling Fitzgerald Cup, inspiring younger teammates with his resilience and leadership.”
It continued: “Cormac has also recently made his rugby debut for Ireland in preparation for the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League Cup. He has won three All-Ireland medals for hurling and an individual achievement award this year for Munster Wheelchair Hurling.”
“Cormac’s warmth, positivity and selfless drive make a lasting impact on his community. Cormac’s story inspires not just teammates, coaches and supporters, but anyone who witnesses his journey. Even prominent figures in Irish sport, such as Limerick hurling manager John Kiely, reference him in motivational talks as a symbol of courage and perseverance,” the tribute concluded.
