For many years Mallow had a strong connection with chocolate production, as the Diarygold site in Annabella housed a Rowntrees factory, and the good news is that a new chocolate factory is imminent in the town. Minister of State Seán Sherlock this week confirmed that 20 to 30 new jobs will be created by DR Confectionary Ltd, and a planning application is due to be lodged shortly.
“This signals another step towards the recovery in the economy of North Cork, and Mallow in particular,” the minister said. “For the first time in many years we have a small to medium enterprise that is moving into chocolate production. This tallies with the continuing investment in the food industry, part of our vision to restore the primacy of North Cork as a food producing centre.
“In a growing confectionery market, it is great that we’re getting a slice of the cake for ourselves,” he said.
