Nollaig Murphy, a primary school teacher from Scoil Ghobnatan in Mallow, travelled to Tanzania in East Africa over the summer and volunteered in both a primary and secondary school in a rural village named Mwamapala. She travelled over to a missionary order, the O.L.As and brought a basic camcorder with her to record the typical lifestyle of people in Tanzania to show her family and friends.
She was so overwhelmed by the lack of facilities in both the primary and secondary school that she felt she needed to do something upon arriving home to help these children.
With the help of Pat O’Hara from Charleville (a video producer) she has made a DVD, ‘An Insight into Tanzania’.
The DVD shows the conditions in both the primary and the secondary school, life in rural Tanzania and some everyday occurrences there. The DVD is amateur footage but shows exactly what everyday life is like.
As many children return to school this week and may complain about various aspects of school life, watching this DVD will give a different perspective of school life.
All the proceeds from this DVD will go directly to Tanzania in mid-November with a volunteer, which is great as there will be no middle man.
Proceeds from the DVD will go towards the purchase of a solar system for the secondary school, school supplies for the children and support to the medical centre in Mwamapala village in Tanzania.
The DVD ‘An Insight into Tanzania’ costs €10 and is available to buy from Philip’s Bookshop, Katie’s Newsagents, Sheehan’s Stationery Shop and Dano’s SuperValu.
This DVD, although amateur footage, is well worth buying and would make one think twice before complaining in our daily lives!
