George Daly Official Opening of Marina at Foynes Yacht Club

The opening ceremony for the new Marina Pontoon was held on Monday last 29th October. It was a great occasion for the Club to have this great facility available to Foynes Yacht Club members and visiting boats. This project was designed, constructed and totally funded by club members – no grants. Every item was sourced and costed to the last cent, members gave their plant, machinery and cranage free of charge helping to keep the cost down and a few non-members helped out with the welding also. At the outset it was decided to go to outside Contractors for quotations, these quotations came back at €500,000. Commodore James McCormack felt that this was a project that could be taken on by club members and put this idea to the Committee and Members. The decision to take on the project was made very quickly and within a few months it was underway. Great credit is due to our Welders and Fitters who constructed the frame in hail, rain and snow. Once they finished the frame was sent for galvanising. On its return the rest of the members, men, women and children, helped out with the decking. The ladies were busy in the kitchen keeping everybody fed. It was great to see such comradery amongst all the members and a great achievement for our club. The project came in under budget, just under €100,000. a saving of €400,000. A huge thank you to our Commodore James McCormack who spearheaded the project and to John Joe Buckley who both worked shoulder to shoulder with everybody involved in the project from start to finish.
Thank you to Canon O’Keeffe who officially opened the Marina and to Tom Neville, TD, and Cllr Adam Teskey who also joined us for the occasion, great supporters of Foynes Yacht Club.
