Racecourse to commemorate its one and only President

The centenary of the birth of Vincent O’Brien, the man once voted the most influential man in the sport of horse racing, will take place this coming Sunday, April 9th, and a little-known fact is that the great man was a great supporter of Cork Racecourse Mallow and was its one and only president, from 1997 until his death in 2009. To mark the centenary of the great Churchtown native, a special ceremony will be held during the Racing Home for Easter Festival on Sunday week when three walls of photographs are unveiled on the first floor of the racecourse pavilion. Members of the O’Brien family have been invited to attend, and the main race of the day, the Imperial Call Chase, will be renamed the Dr. Vincent O’Brien Steeplechase to mark the occasion.
Churchtown is planning a special commemoration in June, and details will be announced in the coming weeks.
