RAISING AWARENESS OF DIABETES

West Limerick Resources are currently preparing a diabetes awareness campaign in Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale for World Diabetes Day on Wednesday 14th November. A number of stores in the towns will be distributing information leaflets during the week November 12th to 16th while staff of the Primary Health Care Project will be at the information stands in both Tesco and Eurospar.

Ahead of World Diabetes Day, a diabetes awareness-raising initiative in West Limerick run by the west Limerick Primary Health Care Project are encouraging the public to wear the blue circle that they want to be universally recognised as a symbol of diabetes awareness.

If you want to help, then join the pin a personality campaign! Either wear the blue circle or ask someone you know to wear the blue circle and have their/your photo taken wearing it. The West Limerick Primary Health Care Project will include the photos in local publicity and send them to the International Diabetes Federation for inclusion on an international gallery of people supporting diabetes awareness.

Your personality can be anyone who you think would profile the blue circle to a wider audience or contributes to the mission to promote diabetes care, prevention and a cure worldwide. Your personality might be you, a local celebrity, a politician, a community leader, your teacher, a sports person, an actor, a neighbour or your gym instructor.

Among those supporting the initiative is West Limerick Fine Gael T.D., Dan Neville who is actively encouraging the public to support the initiative. “Many people are living with undiagnosed diabetes, this number is set to increase dramatically and this is why greater focus on prevention, early detection and effective management is needed.     The Institute of Public Health in Ireland has published new research which suggests that by 2020 the number of adults aged 45 plus years in the Republic of Ireland with diabetes (diagnosed and undiagnosed) is expected to rise to more than 175,000 people.    In 2010 it was estimated that there were 106,000 adults aged 18 years plus in the Republic of Ireland for diabetes” Deputy Neville stated.
