‘Remembering Dan Binchy’ weekend in Charleville

The 4th annual Festival of History Weekend, ‘Remembering Dan Binchy’, will be held in the Charleville Park Hotel this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, honouring the man who was the first minister to a Ireland in Germany; he served from 1929 to 1932.
The festival will be offi-cially opened by Owen Binchy at 8pm tomorrow night, Friday, and a seminar will follow with guest speakers Owen Binchy, Dr. Claire O’Reilly, Professor Niall Osborough, and P.J. McCarthy, President of  Charleville Chamber.
On Saturday there will be a historical walk around Charleville from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, conducted by Owen Binchy, and a seminar at 8.15pm will be addressed by Professor Liam Irwin, University of Limerick, Cllr. Ian Doyle, Professor Niall Osborough, and Owen Binchy. There will also be a Fancy Dress Disco in Ed’s Bar at the Charleville Park Hotel, with proceeds going to St. Joseph’s Foundation.
On Sunday from 10am to 12.30pm a coffee morning will be held at the Char-leville Park Hotel, with proceeds going to the Holy Family Special Needs School.
Ian Doyle, chairman of Charleville Heritage Society, said that after the success of the Archbishop Mannix Memorial Week-end in 2013, the Eliza Lynch Weekend in 2014 and the Seán Clarach MacDomhnaill Weekend last May, it was fitting that the Society was remem-bering another native of Charleville. “Along with being a diplomat, Dan Binchy was also a prom-inent academic and author, I hope people will attend one of the events we have organised over the weekend, either at the Charleville Park Hotel, or on the walk to places of historical interest around Charleville town.”
