St John’s Historical and Conservation Society in Knockainey had a great turn-out for last Saturday’s “Remembering Frank Ryan” Day. The committee was delighted to welcome over 70 attendees from near and far including Frank Ryan’s niece Mary Ryan from Nenagh and his two grandnieces Charlotte Wetton and Philippa Dilworth-Ryan, who travelled from London and Barbados respectively.
The speakers at Frank Ryan’s birthplace in Bottomstown included local historian and committee member Mr Tom Leahy and also Dr Barry McLoughlin from the University of Vienna. The other speakers at the lectures later that evening in St John’s Church were Dr Emmet O’Connor from Ulster University, Dr Barry Whelan from DCU and the afore-mentioned Dr Barry McLoughlin.
Refreshments and a musical interlude were also provided for the enjoyment of the audience including a rousing rendition of the Christy Moore song “Viva la Quinta Brigada” sung by Declan Davern and Mike Cleary.
Many thanks to the St John’s Committee and to all those who helped out and supported this very worthwhile and informative event.
