The Remembering Zoe Charity Weekend fundraiser (which took place in May in Abbeyfeale) cheque presentations took place last Saturday night in the Winners Circle, Abbeyfeale. The overall funds raised were €28,520, so a cheque for €13,760 was presented to Ann Marie O’Connor of Bru Columbanus and another for the same amount was presented to Margaret McGoldrick of FirstLight. Earlier in the year a cheque for €1,000 was presented to Charlotte Nagle of the Hope Foundation and donated to a children’s hospital in India when the TY students from Scoil Ide agus Iosef travelled out to work with poor children.

The first Remembering Zoe weekend was held in honour of little Zoe Scannell, who tragically lost her life in a road traffic accident in West Cork in June 2014. A group of people came together last Christmas under the leadership of John Collins, Clash, and decided to raise funds for Bru Columbanus and First Light, two organisations that helped the Scannell family cope with their immense loss. As the year progressed the number of planned events escalated, with the result that it covered an entire weekend last May. Highlights included a 105K cycle followed closely by a concert starring Zoe’s young friends, dancing to Tournafulla’s Micheal Collins and a huge family fun day on the Sunday.

Last Saturday night chairman John Collins thanked all who contributed to the outstanding success of the weekend and announced that the committee are hoping that this will become an annual event.
