Kilmallock’s rich and unique heritage has been recognised with three separate organisations shortlisting the West Walls Walkway project in the town for awards.
Following the completion of the Kilmallock West Wall Walkway project, parts of the historic town wall became visible again for the first time in generations.
Limerick City and County Council led the project to conserve more than 500 metres of the West Wall and create a walkway along the route, allowing locals and visitors alike to experience the wall for the first time, as up until now the wall had been on private property.
The project has now been shortlisted for three awards:
· Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government – Heritage and Built Environment
· Engineers Ireland – Heritage and Conservation
· Irish Building and Design Awards – Heritage/ Conservation/Cultural Project of the Year.
Other projects shortlisted for the Irish Building and Design Awards include:
· Architectural Project of the Year – Gardens International Development: Limerick 2030
· Tourism and Hospitality Project of the Year – Nicholas Street Regeneration
· Fit Out Project of the Year – N/M20 Project Office, Lissanalta House
· Commercial / Office Building Project of the Year – Gardens International Development Limerick 2030.
Meanwhile in addition to the shortlisting of the West Wall Walkway Kilmallock in the Heritage and Built Environment category for Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards for 2019, Limerick City and County Council is also in the running for 11 other Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards.
The Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards are held annually in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
The Excellence in Local Government Awards showcase best practice in local government and recognise the skills, hard work, innovation and enthusiasm within local government that can often go unrecognised.
The Awards highlight the important work that is carried out by local authorities for the benefit of local communities.
