Retirement party for June O’Connell, Nurse Co-Ordinator at Mallow Day Care Centre

A retirement function for June O’Connell, Nurse Co-ordinator at Mallow Day Care Centre, was held in Springfort Hall last Friday night. On the night, June was joined by her husband Michael and members of her family. They were welcomed by Mary B O’Sullivan, Director of Public Health Nursing. A large number of June’s colleagues and friends attended to pay tribute and acknowledge her life and career on the occasion. Mary B thanked the large group for attending, and many more who could not be present had sent good luck messages to June.
June completed her General Nursing and Midwifery Education in St. Finbarr’s Hospital Cork, where she qualified in 1974, and she worked as a nurse in different locations throughout her career, including Mallow Sugar Factory. June was the first Nurse Co-ordinator in Mallow Day Care Centre where she has worked for the past eighteen years. June’s caring, considerate and compassionate nature was evident in her professional life and, because of these attributes, she managed to make Mallow Day Care Centre the success it is.
On the night of her retirement party, many people spoke with affection and respect of their experiences with June. This was tinged with sadness because she will be missed by all the patients, staff and families.
June also addressed the gathering, and she thanked everyone for coming and told of how she enjoyed her career and the people she had met along the way. Following June’s address, gifts, flowers and a cake were presented to June, further evidence of the affection with which June is held.
