ROTARY GIVES THANKS FOR LIFE!

Members of the Rotary Club of Mallow paid a visit to Annabella Roundabout last Friday as part of ‘Thanks For Life Day’. Last year the group planted several hundred crocus bulbs as part of the international Rotary initiative to eradicate polio, and while the fight continues, the good news is that India has been declared polio-free, leaving just three countries with endemic polio, namely Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. Rotary International has been involved in polio eradication since 1985 and has raised 200 million dollars worldwide so far. In 1985 there were 1,000 cases of polio per day, and in 2012 there are just 1.25 cases per day. Much progress has been made, but the fight goes on to totally eradicate the disease.
