The Scoil Aonghusa team, which is coached by former All Ireland basketball player Rose McCarthy, had a fun day at the Cispheil na mBunscol Non-Competitive Blitz in Cork city recently. The tournament takes place each year and allows primary school children from schools of all sizes to compete in a healthy activity where participation is one of the main aims. The team played four games over the morning and although no formal scores were kept in the non-competitive matches, Scoil Aonghusa pupils did their school proud. Playing basketball is a great sport for helping develop a child’s co-ordination, team building and social skills. Team sports help children to integrate physical activity into their lives, and help their overall physical fitness. Each child received a certificate for participating and, as an added reward, Scoil Aonghusa considered the activity for their monthly award ceremony at school assembly. Tadgh O’Riordan was delighted to receive an award for most skilled player on the court and Ryan Kilgore was awarded best team player on the day.
