SHANAGOLDEN AND DISTRICT COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Over the last twelve months the new committee has been engaged in planning and developing a project for the Capt. Tim Madigan Park in Shanagolden. The park, which covers over ten acres, has been in much need of a major facelift. There are now however plans to develop a walk-way around the field and also to build changing rooms with toilets and showers etc. Planning permission was granted in early February and this was followed by confirmation of a grant totaling €195,101.47 from West Limerick Resources. These new facilities will be for all in our community, young and old, the sporting organisations that currently use the field, Shannonside F.C., Estuary R.F.C., St. Senan’s Community Games, St. Senan’s Bord na nÓg and the local primary school, all of which will benefit from these developments. West Limerick Resources provided great guidance and leadership in helping to put this project together. We say a sincere thank you to all in the office in Newcastle West. Shanagolden Community Council currently run bingo each Tuesday evening starting at 8pm. The committee also runs a weekly lottery draw which will now become a very important fundraiser. We thank the people who support the bingo and the lottery but we do need more promoters and sellers of our lottery. We would encourage people in our community and beyond to purchase a lottery ticket or two each week as this can make a great difference going forward. Looking to the future Shanagolden Community Council will have to engage in serious fundraising ventures if this project is going to become a reality. Currently on the diary is a special Easter bingo on Tuesday 26th March, a monster card game on Good Friday night 29th March with €2,000 in prizes and a monster bingo on Tuesday 2nd April with €4,000 in prizes. In the summer there is a proposal to hold a 10km sponsored walk which will hopefully involve all the sporting organisations. Prior to Christmas there is a wonderful treat in store when the Celtic Tenors come to Shanagolden on Saturday 21st December. The Celtic Tenors will perform their final concert for 2013 in Shanagolden Parish Church, commencing at 8pm. With the support and goodwill of the people this project is very viable and it is envisaged that this development can be completed in early 2014. Shanagolden Community Council will also be taking over the old library in the village in the coming weeks. This building has been refurbished of late and is in very good condition. If there are any groups or organisations in our community who would like to use the library for meetings or workshops etc feel free to contact any of the present committee.
