Mannix College, which has served generations of young people from Charleville and surrounding areas for many years, is set to close after the school was informed this week that no new pupils are to be enrolled from now onwards. It is understood that the Board of Management was informed of the decision at a meeting early this week, and the reason given is the small number of prospective pupils who have applied for enrolment for the coming academic year, and also the small numbers enrolled in the college overall. Following the decision, a review of the viability of the college will now begin.
Commenting on the news, Deputy Michael Moynihan said he was deeply saddened and shocked. “This is very bad news for the town of Charleville,” he said.
