On Thursday last the Green Schools Committee from St. Mary’s Secondary School attended the first ever Green Schools Expo at the RDS in Dublin. Twelve primary and twelve secondary schools from all over Ireland were selected to showcase the work of their Green Schools Committees, and St. Mary’s was one of the selected schools. The students at St. Mary’s are working towards their Green Flag for Litter and Waste  which they are hoping to obtain this school year. As a result of their efforts, general waste in the school has been reduced by 33% and recycling in the school has increased by 17% over the course of one year. President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina paid the students of St. Mary’s a visit at their stand at the Green Schools Expo. The President was highly impressed by the bin that the students made entirely out of plastic bottles as part of their campaign on the environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles.
