The exam season begins

The long wait ended for 120,967 students when the 2018 Junior and Leaving Certificate Examinations got under way yesterday, Wednesday. Leaving Cert students started with English Paper 1 in the morning and Home Economics in the afternoon, and today they have Engineering in the morning and English Paper 2 in the afternoon. Junior Cert students started with English in the morning and CSPE in the afternoon, while today they take Irish Papers 1 and 2.
The exams will run until Wednesday 20th June for Junior Certificate students, and Friday 22nd June for Leaving Certificate. The written examinations in the Leaving Certificate Applied programme finish on Thursday 14th June. The results of the Leaving Cert will be available on Wednesday 15th August, followed a month later by the Junior Cert results.
Mr. Pat Burke, Chairman of the State Examinations Commission (SEC), and his fellow Commissioners extended best wishes on behalf of the SEC to all the candidates sitting the state examinations in 2018. He said: “The state exam-inations are a milestone for students, their families and schools. The reassurance of families and the wider community is an essential support for students sitting examinations. For its part, the Commission will continue its work in ensuring that the exam-inations meet the highest standards of fairness and transparency. The Board and staff of the State Examinations Commission are very aware of the effort which students, their families and schools have invested in the forthcoming examinations, and extend their best wishes to all.
“Over 4 million examination papers have been securely distributed to the examination superintendents involved in supervising the written examinations. The examinations will be held in some 5,223 examination centres across the country over the course of the examination period.”
