Convent Primary School receives 5th Green Flag

A prize giving ceremony was held in the Convent Primary school on Friday 1st June. In camogie, our 5th and 6th class team captained by Niamh O’Leary came joint first after a very exciting final with Gaelscoil Thomais Daibhis. The team who received their medals were: Niamh O’Leary (C), Ali O’Shea, Doireann Murphy, Orla O’Hanlon, Cáit O’Callaghan, Ciara McCarthy, Megan O’Keeffe, Ella White, Molly Roche and Lauren Madden. Congratulations to all the team and thank you to Esther O’Leary for organising the blitz. The next presentation was for our fifth green flag, awarded by An Taisce for Global Citizenship. The school received the award in the Silversprings Hotel on Tuesday 22nd May last. With the committee gathered around in support Adesola Ayodele gave an account of the awards ceremony in Cork, Laura Long and Ella White relaunched our ‘Walk on Wednesday’ campaign while Maeve Glynn announced our Global Citizenship Day which is to be held on 14th June. The Green School Committee displayed the Green Flag and Certificate to rapturous applause by the rest of the school who had dressed up in green for the occasion. Two teams represented our school in the recent Munster Tennis Tournament. They were congratulated for their efforts. Many parents had given of their time and brought the girls to their matches. A special thank you goes to Helen Clarke who co-ordinated all the fixtures. Team A: Muirne Clarke, Mai Willis, Meg Nyhan, Abby Buckley. Team B: Geri Cairns, Ali O’Shea, Niamh O’Leary, Isabel McCabe. Our swimming team got many medals at the North Cork Primary Schools Swim-ming Gala held on the morning of 1st June. Congratulations to Sarah O’Malley, Erika Walsh, Doireann Murphy, Cáit O’Callaghan, Maeve O’Reilly, Áine O’Calla-ghan and Fiona Crowley who represented Convent Primary so well and won the Best Girls School award jointly with Baltydaniel NS. There was success too celebrated in the recent ‘Smart Careers’ exhibition held in S. Mary’s Secondary School. This is a competi-tion to highlight how important science and maths are in various careers. The girls entered some group and some individual projects. The winners were: 1st prize Niamh O’Leary, Leah Cunningham, Isobel McCabe, 2nd Prize: Maeve Glynn, 3rd Prize: Tamara O’Connell and Ella White. Other competitors who took part in the competition were: Aoife O’Sullivan, Littisha Varghese, Grace Moloney, Emma Fitzpat-rick and Doireann Murphy. The girls and their teachers Mrs. Annemarie Lucey and Ms. Irene Barrett deserve great praise for the amount of work that they put into these projects and also thanks to Michelle Starr who co-ordinated the competition under the auspices of CIT and UL. Mrs. Walsh thanked all the teachers, coaches and parents the staff of Carigoon GAA Complex for the use of their facilities for coaching each Friday and the staff of Mallow Pool and Mrs. Nuala O’Connor for organising. This means that every child in our school participates in swimming, athletics, camogie and Gaelic Football, Mrs Annemarie Lucey was also commended for her co-ordination of the Orienteering in our school for 5th and 6th class pupils. They have had great success this year including winning the county, Munster and Irish Championship titles both in individual and team events. It was a very enjoyable afternoon of celebration for children teachers and staff of Convent Primary School.
